In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI has stormed ahead to become one of the most celebrated tech achievements in recent years. Tech giants like OpenAI, Google, Amazon, and IBM are still advancing these new AI models, to the benefit of consumers and shareholders alike. Now digital entrepreneurs can surround themselves with AI experts when drawing up their plans, thanks to a new Google service.
Online Business Management
The use of specialized software to manage your business is nothing new. On an individual level, products like Microsoft’s 365 suite have helped millions keep their personal and work lives organised over the years. Broadly, the SaaS industry is booming and will continue to grow as digital services get even better and more useful to the average person.
In today’s landscape, many companies are successful just by offering a platform for service for their audience. This isn’t unique to business – streaming services and iGaming sites fit the same mold. In the entertainment space, businesses like the online casino at Paddy Power rely on their online platform where users can play slots and other kinds of casino games. Elsewhere, the retail space is also filled with small, mid-sized, and gargantuan e-commerce stores opening all over the world.
One thing unites all these business models – their integration into the digital economy. The entrepreneurs behind these businesses must pay close attention to their online presence, carefully planning their branding, SEO, and other ways to reel customers in. For support, new or rusty entrepreneurs often find sites like our start-up guides at Entrepreneurship Life, or other informational resources online. However, we’re now starting to see some of the first AI consultants taking form – artificial experts trained to help entrepreneurs tackle tasks of all types.
Google’s Gemini Gems
Google is ahead of the competition when it comes to developing these AI consultants, affectionately called Gems. Housed within Google’s Gemini AI infrastructure, Gems are profiles with their own distinct names and marching orders. Each one is a distinct AI model, allowing users to train them on industry-relevant data to give the Gem a narrower but deeper understanding of a subject than typical, all-purpose AI models. These Gems were first announced at the 2024 Google I/O development conference – see it below.
Now Gems are officially here and available for Advanced, Business or Enterprise subscribers of Google’s Gemini service. If you’re wondering what they are capable of, Google has already provided several pre-made models. They include general assistants, like a learning coach that rewords complex topics in simpler language or a brainstorming bot that will suggest gift or party theme ideas.
Moving into more specialized roles, Google’s other pre-made Gems tackle career guidance. You give the bot a skill or career path and, using publicly available information, the Gem will compile a list or a plan of action that should help with your career ambitions. They have also made a writing editor that can critique and correct the spelling, grammar, and overall structure of your writing. Mileage may vary when it comes to fiction, especially if it’s too stylized or avant-garde. Understanding and communicating tone is a known challenge to natural language processing, detailed here by IBM.
At its most specialized, you’ll find a Gem for computer programmers. This is something the coding site GitHub already has in place, the Copilot AI that helps coders keep their work accurate, neat, and above all else, functional. After coming to prominence in 2023, OpenAI licensed their AI tech to GitHub to make Copilot X, featuring a chatbot that included voice command support. Seeing the value here, Google has tailor-made a Gem for this exact purpose, too.
Of course, Gemini users aren’t obligated to use the pre-made models. Instead, you can boot up your own and train it to whatever niche you operate in. Expect more pre-made models in the future, and for these models to get more powerful. If successful, Gems could ring in a new generation of virtual assistants and business consultants.
