Illusion Art Museum Prague (IAM Prague) hosted a vernissage last week, unveiling new works by South African artist Jonty Hurwitz, Berlin-based kinetic artist Florian Goerlitz, and Slovak digital artist Andrej Boleslavský. The new additions expand the museum’s collection of contemporary illusion, kinetic, and interactive art. Hurwitz presents two mirror anamorphoses, Echo and Rejuvenation in Bronze, inviting viewers to experience how form, reflection, and perspective can transform what we see. Goerlitz presents Infinity, a kinetic work that brings movement and mechanical precision into the museum’s growing collection of contemporary illusion art. Boleslavský contributes the digital artwork Liquid Mirror, which explores the relationship between image, movement, and perception through a responsive digital surface, where many moments coexist, sliding against one another. Since 2018, IAM Prague has become one of the city’s most distinctive interactive art attractions, combining visual illusion, Czech history, playful storytelling, and participatory installations. The museum recently received the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for the fifth consecutive year, reflecting consistently strong visitor feedback. The new works mark another step in the museum’s broader ambition: to operate not only as a visitor attraction, but as an active cultural venue that supports artists, hosts events, and creates new reasons for local and...

Prague’s Metro D project is entering another phase, with the city’s transport authority preparing to launch architectural and artistic competitions for two future stations. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) expects to announce the competitions in September, according to Deputy Mayor Jaromír Beránek, who oversees transport. One competition will focus on the complete interior design of the future Písnice station, while another will commission a major artwork for the Pankrác station. Officials held an introductory meeting for both competitions this week. The winning proposals are expected to be selected before the end of the year. For Písnice, DPP plans to organize an open competition that could attract architects and designers from abroad. The goal is to create the station’s overall interior appearance. In contrast, the competition for Pankrác will be more limited, with five invited artists competing to design a single artistic feature for the station. The city has already used similar competitions to shape several Metro D stations. Designs have previously been selected for Libuš, Pankrác D, Olbrachtova, Nádraží Krč, Nemocnice Krč, and Nové Dvory. After the Písnice competition is completed, DPP also plans to select designs for Náměstí Míru, Depo Písnice, and Náměstí Bratří Synků. Before work begins...

Canadian singer Garou will perform in Prague on 2 October 2026 at the Prague Congress Centre as part of his European “Best of” tour. The show marks his return to the city after a sold-out concert in 2023 and will feature a full big band arrangement combining his most popular songs with newer material. Garou remains one of the most recognisable voices in French-language music over the past two decades. Known for his rough, expressive tone and strong stage presence, he first reached international fame at the end of the 1990s and has maintained a loyal audience across Europe and Canada. Tickets are available via Ticketportal.cz Born Pierre Garand in Sherbrooke, Quebec, he grew up in Canada and studied music from an early age. Before his breakthrough, he performed in bars and small venues, building his reputation through live shows. His career changed in 1997 when he was cast by lyricist Luc Plamondon as Quasimodo in the musical Notre-Dame de Paris. The role brought him instant international attention and led directly to his solo career. His debut album Seul, released in 2000, became one of the most successful French-language records of its time. It was followed by a series of...

Prague Has 756 Cars for Every 1,000 Residents and the Number Is Still Rising

With roughly one million on-street parking spaces serving a city of 1.4 million people, streets in many neighborhoods increasingly resemble open-air parking lots. Experts say the problem is not driven by a single factor but by a combination of population growth, suburban expansion, changing lifestyles and decades of planning decisions. The Czech capital now has 756 registered passenger cars for every 1,000 residents. Thirty years ago, there were around 300 fewer vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants. While the number of registered cars briefly declined after reaching a peak in 2021, it has been climbing again ever since. Hundreds of Thousands Enter Prague Every Day Although Prague officially has around 1.4 million residents, its transport network serves far more people than that. According to anonymized and aggregated mobility data provided by O2 Dataclair, about 460,000 additional people travel into Prague on a typical busy weekday. In practical terms, the city’s daytime population grows by roughly one-third every working day. The data includes all forms of transport, but the additional demand also places heavy pressure on Prague’s road network. Planning Rules Encourage More Driving The city still applies minimum parking requirements for new developments. Residential projects generally must provide at least one parking...

Hollywood actor and musician Keanu Reeves paid a visit to Prague Castle on Sunday, where he and his bandmates from Dogstar were welcomed by Czech President Petr Pavel. The American rock band is scheduled to perform at Prague’s SaSaZu club on Monday evening. The concert was originally planned for Archa+, but organizers moved it to the larger venue after tickets sold quickly. The show has since sold out. Before taking the stage, the musicians spent part of their day exploring Prague Castle. President Pavel shared photos from the meeting on his Instagram account, revealing that the visit ended with a relaxed stop at the historic Vikárka restaurant inside the castle grounds. “The Californian rock band Dogstar visited Prague Castle today. In this heat, we wrapped up the tour with a cold beer at the Vikárka pub,” Pavel wrote. Although the president did not mention Reeves by name, the actor—who plays bass for Dogstar—is clearly visible in the photographs alongside the rest of the band. One of the images shows Pavel and the musicians seated near a wall displaying historic photographs, including a well-known image of former Czech President Václav Havel sharing a beer with former U.S. President Bill Clinton.
Travel between Prague and the Tatras region in Slovakia will soon be quicker, as a popular low-cost airline is launching a new route connecting the Czech capital with Poprad in northeastern Slovakia. Until now, the only way to travel between these two destinations was by train or coach. Currently, the only air link between Slovakia and Prague has been from Košice Airport, with daily Ryanair flights. Wizz Air plans to launch the new service in late October, with departures on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The flight will take about one hour, making it much faster than the seven-hour train ride or the even longer bus journey. Many people from eastern Slovakia work or study in Prague. Starting in October, they will be able to make the trip for €24.99. With eastern Slovakia now gaining another direct air connection to Prague, people are wondering when a similar route will open between Prague and the Slovak capital. Ryanair recently said they are open to this idea, but need to analyse the data first. The last direct flight between the two capitals operated in 2019. At present, travellers from both Prague and Bratislava can use the flights between the Austrian capital and Prague....

With its setting on the edge of Klánovický Forest in Prague-East, Unicorn School has developed a private kindergarten environment where early education is closely tied to nature, movement and individual attention. Housed in a family villa with a garden, playground and heated swimming pool, the facility brings together structured preschool learning and a day-to-day rhythm shaped by outdoor experience. The kindergarten and children’s group focus on small learning communities, where children are guided according to their own pace of development rather than a uniform classroom model. Teachers with long-term experience in early childhood education work with an emphasis on stability, trust and close cooperation with parents. A significant part of the programme takes place outside. The proximity of the forest allows for frequent walks, outdoor activities and seasonal learning, which are integrated into the daily schedule rather than treated as occasional excursions. The approach reflects elements of forest kindergarten practice, where direct contact with nature is considered part of the learning process. Inside, Unicorn School combines several educational frameworks. Montessori-inspired principles are used alongside Free Flow Learning and the Good Start Method®. Development is monitored through iSophi® diagnostics, which help adjust activities to individual needs. Early numeracy is introduced through...

Summer in Prague is traditionally a time for festivals, open-air events, and nightlife venues, all of which attract visitors with special programs. Among them is Roxy, which is kicking off the new season with an expanded lineup of events, new production elements, and confirmed acts for the fall season. The club on Dlouhá Street has been shaping the city’s electronic music scene since 1992, and earlier this year it received the Bass Award for best club in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This summer, the venue is entering the warmer months with a packed schedule designed for regulars and newcomers alike. Three recurring nights form the backbone of the program. Mainstage Party and Techno Night take over Fridays and Saturdays, while DNB Wednights, held every other Wednesday, bring drum and bass enthusiasts together in the middle of the week. DNB Wednights start at 8 p.m., while the club’s regular Friday and Saturday events begin at 11 p.m. Alongside its regular program, Roxy is preparing a series of themed nights that push the energy even further. Techno [Rave] and Hard Dance editions promise a heavier soundtrack and a different atmosphere for those looking for something beyond the club’s standard format. Music...

EU Plans to Extend Free Roaming to Six More Balkan Countries

Travelers heading to the Western Balkans could eventually use their phones without worrying about extra roaming charges, as the European Union moves forward with plans to expand its roaming zone beyond its current borders. The European Commission is working on a proposal that would bring six Western Balkan countries — Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia — under the same roaming framework currently used across EU member states and participating European countries. If the plan is approved, residents and visitors would be able to make calls, send text messages and use mobile data in those countries under conditions similar to those they already enjoy throughout much of Europe. The process, however, is still at an early stage. While the Commission has expressed support for the expansion, the proposal must first receive approval from EU member states before negotiations can begin. Earlier this year, the Commission asked the Council of the European Union for authorization to open formal talks with the six Western Balkan partners. Once approved, separate agreements would need to be negotiated with each country. According to the Commission, successful negotiations would create the legal framework necessary for the Western Balkans to join the EU...

Coca-Cola is marking a major milestone in Czechia this year. The company has been producing its beverages locally for 55 years, growing from a niche product available only to a select few during the communist era into one of the country’s most widely consumed drinks. According to company figures, Coca-Cola’s Czech facilities produced 415.9 million liters of beverages in 2025 alone. When licensed production first began in the country in 1971, annual output stood at around 18.4 million liters. The story of Coca-Cola in Czechia began before local manufacturing existed. Many Czechs first encountered the drink at the end of World War II through American soldiers stationed in Europe. During the communist period, however, access remained limited. Bottles were mainly sold through Tuzex stores, which specialized in foreign goods, or in hotels catering to foreign visitors. A turning point came in 1971, when licensed production using the original Coca-Cola concentrate was launched in Modřice, near Brno. That move established the foundations for what would eventually become one of the company’s key operations in Central Europe. Another important chapter followed after the fall of communism. In 1993, Coca-Cola opened a production facility in Prague’s Kyje district, which has since become the...

The Czech Republic is attempting a high-stakes pivot from an era of infrastructure inertia to a period of private-sector-led expansion. With a fresh mandate and a debut budget under heavy scrutiny, the new government is betting that Public-Private Partnerships can bridge a decade-long investment gap without shattering the state’s fiscal ceiling. However, the success of this “infrastructure spring” depends on a simple realization: the state is not just buying asphalt, but long-term operational resilience. To succeed where others have stumbled, Prague must look beyond the lowest bid and anchor its future in partners capable of transforming political ambition into a

A major international exhibition examining the growing influence of artificial intelligence, data collection and digital surveillance opens today, June 11, at Galerie Rudolfinum. Titled DATAS: The Data and the Sovereign, the exhibition brings together 21 artists and collectives from across Europe and beyond to explore how algorithms and AI systems increasingly shape personal choices, political decisions and national sovereignty. Through installations, research-based projects and multimedia works, the exhibition asks a central question: who controls our data, and what does that mean for individual freedom in the digital age? The project is part of a broader European collaboration involving cultural institutions from five countries. Partners include Galerie Rudolfinum and MeetFactory in the Czech Republic, the Goethe-Institut in Germany, Tallinn Art Hall in Estonia, IZOLYATSIA in Ukraine and Slovenian organization Projekt Atol. The initiative has been supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme. According to gallery director Julia Bailey, the exhibition aims to highlight both the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence while encouraging debate about privacy, personal sovereignty and political freedom.
A new outdoor installation dedicated to Pinocchio has opened in the garden of the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague in Prague’s Malá Strana. The scenic route, created by Daniela and Silvana Nicoletta, leads visitors through scenes from the story of the wooden puppet, with characters including Geppetto, the Talking Cricket, the Blue Fairy, as well as the Cat, the Fox and the Whale. The garden exhibition, accessible from Vlašská Street, will remain open until September 12. It runs Tuesday to Saturday from 3 pm to 7 pm, with additional weekend opening hours. Entry is free. The initiative is part of broader celebrations marking the legacy of Carlo Collodi, whose novel “The Adventures of Pinocchio” has been translated and published worldwide. Alongside the garden installation, the institute is preparing a related exhibition titled “Pinocchio in the World,” hosted in its courtyard on Šporkova Street. From June 17 to September 17, the institute will also present a display of 79 digitised book covers of “The Adventures of Pinocchio,” published across 40 countries. The collection will be installed in the institute’s arcade, showing how the story has been visually reinterpreted over time.
Smartwings will introduce a new direct route between Prague and Lisbon this autumn, giving travelers a nonstop connection to the Portuguese capital for the first time through the Czech carrier’s regular network. The new service will begin operating on October 23, with flights departing three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tickets are already available across Smartwings’ distribution channels, with one-way fares starting at CZK 2,934, including standard hand luggage. The launch reflects growing demand among Czech travelers for convenient access to popular European destinations. Lisbon has become an increasingly sought-after city break destination, attracting visitors with its historic neighborhoods, coastal setting, food scene and mild climate. “We have been observing increasing interest among Czech passengers in attractive European destinations for a long time. That is why we continue to expand our network of scheduled routes,” said Michal Váňa, Sales Director of Smartwings. He added that the new connection would allow passengers to reach one of Europe’s most visited capitals without the need for a transfer. Lisbon will become the airline’s fourth destination in Portugal. Smartwings already operates flights from Prague to Porto, Funchal on the island of Madeira, and Ponta Delgada on São Miguel in the Azores....

Fans of Broadway musicals, film soundtracks and contemporary choral music will have the chance to experience a different take on some of the world’s best-known songs later this month, when the Voices of Prague International Choir returns with its latest production. The ensemble’s fourth standalone concert, Broadway Lights: A Night of Musicals with Voices of Prague, is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Prague’s historic Evangelical Church U Salvátora in the Old Town. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Get your ticket here. Made up of around 40 singers representing more than 20 countries, Voices of Prague has become one of the city’s most international musical communities. Bringing together people from different backgrounds who now call Prague home, the choir uses music to bridge cultures, languages and personal stories. Under the direction of conductor Brian Dimech, the group will perform a cappella arrangements of songs drawn from Broadway productions, acclaimed films and internationally recognised pop classics. Without the use of instruments, the focus shifts entirely to the expressive possibilities of the human voice.
Czechia suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Korea in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico on Thursday, despite taking the lead midway through the second half. Ladislav Krejčí appeared to have put the Czechs on course for a positive start when he headed home in the 59th minute at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan. Vladimir Coufal’s long throw found the unmarked defender inside the six-yard box, and Krejčí made no mistake with Czechia’s first shot on target of the match. The advantage lasted only eight minutes. South Korea equalised through Hwang In-beom, who was played through by Lee Kang-in before calmly lifting the ball over goalkeeper Matěj Kovář after cutting inside the Czech defence. Czechia thought they had regained the lead in the 77th minute when Tomáš Souček headed into the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. The missed opportunity proved costly. Just three minutes later, Hwang turned provider, delivering a cross from the right that substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu converted from close range to give Korea a 2-1 lead. The Czech side pushed for a late equaliser, creating several dangerous moments in the closing stages. Adam Hložek came close...

A 700-meter concrete wall in Prague 6 is about to become a landmark of contemporary street art. Starting June 15, thirty artists from the Czech Republic and abroad will spend two weeks painting Mural Ruzyně — a project that, once complete, will rank as the third longest collaborative mural in Europe. The wall runs along Vlastina Street in Ruzyně and has long been one of those forgotten stretches of urban infrastructure that nobody really looks at. By the end of June, that changes. What Is Mural Ruzyně The project is initiated by the Prague 6 municipal district and carried out by The Chemistry Gallery as part of the Urban Pictus festival — a biennial event now in its third edition, running from June to September 2026. The painted surface will cover roughly 1,800 square meters, wrapping the theme “The Beauty of the City in Motion” across the full length of the wall. The work runs June 15–30, and the public is welcome to watch the process unfold on site. Who Is Painting It The lineup spans both established names and internationally recognized figures. From the Czech scene: Michal Škapa, Toy Box, Chemis, Sany, and Jakub Tytykalo. The international roster includes...

Prague Museum Night returns for its 19th edition, offering free or discounted admission at more than 60 venues across the city. One of the biggest additions in 2026 is the participation of the National Gallery Prague. As part of the event, visitors will be able to access several of its major sites, including the Schwarzenberg Palace, Šternberk Palace, Salm Palace and the Convent of St. Agnes. Other newcomers include Rothmayer Villa and Signal Space, a digital art venue located in Prague’s historic center. Signal Space will present its immersive exhibition Echoes of Tomorrow, alongside an interactive children’s zone and a selection of video mapping projects previously featured at the Signal Festival. The heart of this year’s event will once again be the recently renovated Main Building of the Museum of Prague in Florenc. The neo-Renaissance landmark reopened to the public six months ago after a five-year restoration project and will serve as the main meeting point throughout the evening. Outdoor activities will begin at 4 p.m., while the museum building itself opens at 6 p.m. Visitors will be able to explore the museum’s permanent exhibition City in Time, visit the Tělák exhibition and take part in creative workshops designed for...

Marriage in Czechia Hits Record Low as Financial Pressure and Uncertainty Grow

Marriage numbers in the Czech Republic have fallen to their lowest level this century, continuing a trend that shows no sign of reversing. In 2025, 42,548 couples got married, according to the Czech Statistical Office. The figure marks a new low and follows several years of gradual decline. The trend is not new, but its direction is becoming more pronounced. In 2013, 43,499 marriages were recorded, a long-time low at the time. A decade later, 2024 saw around 44,500 weddings, briefly interrupting expectations of a steady recovery. The question increasingly raised in Czech society is why fewer people are choosing marriage. One factor is the changing role of marriage in society. Living together without marriage has become standard, and having children outside marriage no longer carries social stigma. Same-sex couples are openly accepted, and long-term relationships are increasingly viewed as valid without formal registration. This shift has reduced the pressure to marry, according to life coach Aleš Kalina, who says that fewer weddings do not automatically mean weaker relationships, but rather different forms of partnership. Practical considerations also play a role. Marriage still offers legal advantages, including inheritance rights, tax benefits, and clearer arrangements regarding children, but many couples see...

RefuFest will return to Prague on June 20, 2026, marking its 20th anniversary edition at VILA Štvanice Theatre and the surrounding outdoor area. The event, organised by the non-profit InBáze, will coincide with World Refugee Day and run under the motto “Courage. Resilience. Responsibility.” RefuFest has long been focused on intercultural exchange and community life in Prague. Organisers say the aim is to create an open space where people from the Czech Republic and abroad can meet through music, food and shared experiences. “This year’s motto reflects the need to return to basic values in a time of uncertainty,” said Barbora Hanzalová from InBáze. Co-organiser Jana Remenárová added that the festival continues to focus on dialogue and mutual understanding. The music programme will feature a mix of international and Czech artists. Among the highlights is the All Star Refjúdží Band, bringing together musicians from China, Kurdistan, Armenia and the United States. Other performances include Cumbia Cooperativa with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and Balkanzor, a multinational band combining influences from Spain, Peru, France, Greece, Bulgaria and Czechia. View this post on Instagram A post shared by RefuFest (@refufest_inbaze) The line-up also includes Ritmo Gitano, blending flamenco, rumba and salsa with Romani...

For the first time in two decades, the Czech national football team is back on the grandest stage of them all. After a grueling, nerve-shredding qualification campaign, the Národní tým is packing its bags for North America. For Czech football fans, this is a seismic moment; the country has not featured at a World Cup since 2006, back when legends like Pavel Nedvěd and Tomáš Rosický pulled on the jersey. Now that the initial euphoria of qualification has settled, the harsh light of tournament reality sets in. Placed in a fascinating Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, South Korea, and South Africa, Miroslav Koubek’s men face a unique set of challenges. How far can this resilient side actually go, what is their realistic ceiling, and what should fans expect when the tournament kicks off? The Group A Landscape: Expert Verdict and Predictions On paper, the Czech Republic could have faced a far more intimidating draw. Group A lacks a traditional European powerhouse or a South American giant like Brazil or Argentina. However, it represents a highly competitive, balanced, and unpredictable environment where mathematical simulations give the Czechs a 64.2% chance of progressing to the newly introduced Round of 32. When diving...

Czech Strawberry Season Kicks Off — But Expect Smaller Berries and Higher Prices

Strawberry season in the Czech Republic is getting underway earlier than many expected. Several farms are welcoming pickers from mid-May, with the bulk of the season running through late May and into June. Kunratická Jahodárna in Prague is among the first to open, targeting a start date no later than May 20. Other operations across the country are planning to follow in late May or early June, though exact dates remain weather-dependent. “The weather is unpredictable and difficult to forecast,” says Jan Simandl, who runs Farma Simandl in the Vysočina region. “We expect to begin picking in early June.” Prices are going up — but only slightly Most farms are not planning dramatic price hikes, though nearly all acknowledge that costs have risen. Inputs like fertilizers and chemicals have become more expensive, and that is beginning to show at the farm gate. At Kunratická Jahodárna, assistant to the director Eva Jakoubek Čorbová was direct: “The price will definitely be higher. Our costs have increased — everything has become more expensive.” At Albaflor, manager Jiří Sixta put a number to it. Prices will rise by ten crowns compared to last year, when a kilogram sold for 79 crowns. That said, the...

On May 30 and 31, 2026, residents and tourists alike will have the chance to walk through municipal and private vineyards, taste locally produced wines, and hear the stories behind some of the city’s oldest green spaces. Most vineyards will be open free of charge between 10:00 and 18:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. The exception is the St. Clare Vineyard (Vinice sv. Kláry), where a small entrance fee covers a guided cellar and vineyard tour plus two wine samples. Two locations — Salabka and the St. Wenceslas Vineyard — will only take part on Sunday, May 31.
Three Taiwanese theatre companies are bringing dementia, Lady Macbeth, and poetic confusion to one of Prague’s most beloved festivals. Taiwan is making its Prague Fringe debut this May, with a dedicated showcase called Taiwan Week running from May 25 to 30 at Divadlo Inspirace in the city centre. The initiative is the first official collaboration between Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture — represented locally by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office — and the Prague Fringe Festival, now celebrating its 25th anniversary. This year’s festival brings together 60 companies from 17 countries across seven venues in historic Prague. Taiwan’s contribution: nine performances from three companies, plus a side of Taiwanese tea and traditional snacks for good measure. What’s on stage The three productions are as different from each other as you’d expect from a country that clearly isn’t playing it safe: Dancing with Dementia (Bandone Productions) is a solo show by Hsuan Szu-Min, drawn from her own experience of caring for a mother living with dementia and depression. Minimal staging, expressive movement, and a lot of emotional weight. The Rodin Project: Lady Macbeth (Shinehouse Theatre) mashes up Rodin’s Gates of Hell with Shakespeare’s most ruthless female character — performed by three...

One of Prague’s most celebrated Renaissance landmarks is getting a full restoration. The Prague Castle Administration has launched a major reconstruction of the Royal Summer Palace — widely known as the Belvedere — a project expected to run for roughly two years at a cost of approximately 100 million CZK. The building, which sits in the Royal Garden at Prague Castle, is regarded as the finest example of Italian Renaissance architecture north of the Alps. Work will cover the facade, historic interiors, columned arcades, stone and metal elements, stucco decorations, and joinery, including windows, doors and shutters. “The Summer Palace is one of the most fundamental buildings of Prague Castle,” said Pavel Vyhnánek, director of the Prague Castle Administration. “We will restore the wooden coffered ceiling in the upper hall and return it to its original appearance, following the design of Bonifác Wolmut.” New Lighting, Refurbished Chandeliers Interior upgrades are a central part of the project. According to Barbora Feret, who heads the castle’s construction preparation and implementation department, the exhibition spaces will receive new, purpose-designed lighting, while the publicly accessible areas will be fitted with wall lights. # The historic chandeliers that dominate the interior will be refurbished rather...

University studies are still often associated with a fixed schedule, daily attendance at lectures, and limited time for work or personal life. However, this model no longer reflects today’s reality. More and more people are working while studying, developing their own projects, or seeing their careers naturally expand beyond national borders. In these situations, they face the decision of whether to prioritize their studies or a job opportunity. Unicorn University responds to this reality by building on adaptability. The traditional structure of university studies is no longer sufficient today. More and more students are combining their studies with a career that doesn’t always follow a linear path. One day you might be working in Prague, and the next you might accept an offer abroad. That is precisely why educational models are evolving to reflect the needs of today. For example, Unicorn University offers multiple study formats – from on-campus to part-time to fully online. On-site studies take place at the university’s campus, part-time studies are typically held on weekends, and the hybrid format is delivered fully online with live consultations with teachers. Each format adapts to the student’s needs, not the other way around. “Part-time or online studying is becoming...

Entry to the festival grounds is free. The headline show is Bird’s Meeting, a production by the Forman Brothers inspired by the work of Persian mystic Fariduddin Attar. The piece is returning to Prague after a year-long tour of France and Belgium. Joining it are two international acts: French visual artist Boris Gibé with a new performance called Anatomy of Desire, and Belgian ensemble Les P’tits Bras with the acrobatic show Vent d’Ouest. The island will also host the Imaginarium — an interactive exhibition featuring installations, puppets, theatrical props, painted works and mechanical contraptions created by artists and collaborators of the Forman Brothers. It opens on May 10, ahead of the festival itself, and is designed for visitors of all ages. Štvanice Island was chosen deliberately. “We were looking for a place that would have its own character — open, by the river, with space for great...

Long before air travel reshaped Europe, luxury trains defined how people crossed the continent. In Prague, that era has been brought back to life through a restored dining carriage dating to 1906, offering passengers a glimpse into how travel once looked—and tasted. The historic restaurant car, originally built in Smíchov by the Ringhoffer company, has been carefully restored and now operates on special routes departing from the Czech capital. Designed for the Swiss Dining Car Company, the carriage once served passengers across the railway network of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Guests are served a multi-course menu inspired by historical recipes, paired with drinks, in an interior that closely reflects its original design. The restoration itself took two years and required extensive work. According to the team behind the project at the Museum of Old Machines and Technologies in Žamberk, much of the carriage had to be rebuilt due to missing or damaged components. Specialists focused on preserving the smallest details, including brass fixtures and original-style lighting. Where original elements could not be saved, replacements were crafted using historical references to maintain authenticity. The culinary side of the experience was developed in collaboration with JLV, a catering company linked to Czech Railways....

Prague Is Planting 900 Trees to Fight Urban Heat — and It’s Just Getting Started

Prague is moving to green its streets with hundreds of trees engineered — through selection, not genetics — to survive the increasingly hostile conditions of a warming city. The plan calls for planting 900 climate-resistant trees across the capital over the next ten years, alongside climbing plants on building facades, as the city braces for the accelerating effects of climate change. The warming rate in Prague has nearly doubled over the past fifteen years compared to earlier measurements, according to a city climate report. The effort is already underway. This year, the city planted 23 trees along V Cibulkách Street in Prague 5. The next target is Pod Strašnickou vinicí Street in Prague 10. Individual species will be monitored over fifteen years, after which only the hardiest performers will be replicated across the city. Officials plan to use the findings to gradually replace existing urban trees — primarily lindens, maples, and acacias — which are increasingly struggling under current conditions. A project four years in, with modest results so far. The Klimastromy project launched in 2022, but the numbers on the ground have been slow to grow. Since its start, only 29 trees — elms — have been installed, at...

Prague’s Car Count Has Jumped 44% in Ten Years — Among the Highest in the EU

Prague has added cars at a pace nearly unmatched anywhere else in the European Union, according to data from Eurostat. Over the past decade, the number of registered passenger vehicles per 1,000 residents rose from 565 to 753 — a jump of roughly 190 vehicles per 1,000 people that ranks the Czech capital among the ten most motorised regions on the continent. In absolute terms, the shift is even more striking. Prague counted just over 821,000 registered passenger cars in 2013. By 2023, that figure had climbed to 1,186,209 — a 44 percent increase in ten years. Among EU regions, only two Italian areas and parts of Romania recorded similarly steep percentage gains. Romania’s case is largely a product of arithmetic: with only 242 cars per 1,000 residents in 2013 — well below the EU average of 493 at the time — even modest absolute growth translates into outsized percentage jumps. Prague, by contrast, was already above the EU average a decade ago, making its sustained rate of growth considerably more significant. The two Italian regions — Valle d’Aosta and the autonomous province of Trento — benefit from specific local tax arrangements that make vehicle registration there particularly attractive, which...

How Brussels Could Rewrite Two Centuries of Czech Beer Tradition

Walk into any Czech pub and ordering a “desítka” (ten) or a “dvanáctka” (twelve) is as natural as asking for a coffee. But that could change. The European Union is advancing a proposal to standardize beer labeling across member states — a move that could make the Czech degree system, rooted in 19th-century chemistry, obsolete. Under the draft regulation, the traditional measurement based on degrees Plato (°P) — which indicates the richness of the original wort before fermentation — would be phased out in favor of a simpler label showing alcohol content. If the plan moves forward, implementation could begin around 2031. The Plato scale has deep roots in Czech brewing. It was developed in the mid-1800s by Karel Napoleon Balling, a chemist who went on to serve as rector of the Prague Polytechnic. For Czech producers, the system is not just a technical standard — it is a cultural inheritance. “This has been our traditional method of taxation for roughly two hundred years,” said Tomáš Maier, an economist at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. “I see no reason to change it. It is certainly not in the interest of the Czech brewing industry.” The proposal raises...
